12 Jyotirlingas in India


Jyotirlinga in India held an important place in Hindu beleif. One of the most worthy pilgrimage journey in India is the visit to the 12 jyotirlingas. It will be an refreshing experience for any of the Shiva devotee. In these holy places Lord Shiva is worshiped in the form of Jyotirlingas, means ray of light. In Hindus it is believed that Jyotirlinga is the source of energy and all works in earth are done under his guidance.

It is believed that every hindu should visit 12 jyotirlingas atleast once in a lifetime. The views of Jyotirlinga enlighten the life of the devotee by removing darkness from the mind and bring peace, happiness and prosperity in the life of the devotee. This twelve jyotirlingas yatra will purify the mind and body and provide complete peace.

The 12 Jyotirlingas are spread across India from southern part to northern part. Below I am mentioning 12 Jyotirlingas and their location:

  1. Rameshwaram : Rameshwaram is located in Tamil Nadu. Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga is situated on peninsular tip of Rameshwaram. It was Lord Rama who installed this Linga while his way to attack Ravana.

  2. Kedarnath : The north most Jyotirlinga is located at Uttarakhanda. It is located at stunning mountainscape of the Garhwal Himalayas at the head of the Mandakini River.

  3. Somnath : Somnath Jyotirlinga is located in Gujarat. It is known as "the Shrine Eternal". 

  4. Mallikarjun : Mallikarjun in Srisailam, Andra Pradesh. There is very strange speciality in the idol, it is said that if you touch the forehead of the idol than you can feel like a human skin.
  5. Mahakaleshwar : Mahakaleshwar is located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Kal Bhairava Beautiful paintings in the Malwa style are the speciality of this temple.

  6. Omakareshwar : Omakareshwar in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh. The speciality of this temple lays in its attractive pillars and stone works.
  7. Baidyanath : Baidyanath in Deoghar, Jharkhand.
  8. Nageshwar: Nageshwar in Dwarka, Speciality of this Shivlinga is that unlike other Shivlingas which are made of black stone. It is made of stone known popularly as Dwaraka Shila, which has small chakras on it.
  9. Trimbakeshwar in Nasik: Trimbakeshwar in Nasik, Maharashtra

  10. Bhimashankar : Bhimashankar in Maharastra.
  11. Grishneshwar :Grishneshwar in Varanasi uttarpradesh.
  12. Vishwanath : Vishwanath is located in Kashi Uttarpradesh.

One can start journey of pilgrimage ciruit from any 12 Jyotirlinga places. But most of the the pilgrims come to tha states of Madhya Pradesh. So it will be good idea if you start your journey from Madhya Pradesh and move forward.
